Werner Nieuwoudt

I was born in Europe, and spent my formative years living in various places around the globe.

I grew up being an observer of others, living in societies and cultures which were not my own, but within which I had to function. This has had an immense influence on my worldview, which is reflected in the way in which I approach art-making.

I matriculated in 1992 at Pro Arte, school of art, music, ballet and drama where I majored in art. I furthered my art studies in Tokyo, Japan for three months, focusing on oil painting and conceptualisation.

My art is informed by the observation of behaviour, and the interpretation of perception. Every piece will evoke a different interpretation of perception depending on the individual viewer.

There are no limits to interpretation as it is influenced by the viewer’s cultural and socioeconomic circumstances, which in turns influences the perspective on the artwork. Interpretation and perspective, influences the emotion evoked by the artwork.
