Hermanus McDonald
Hermanus Mcdonald grew up on a farm in the northern parts of South Africa.
Known to all as ‘Mac’, he began to carve figurines using local wood species, at an early stage of his life. This laid the foundation for a lifelong love affair with art – and especially sculpting.
It was when he worked at the South African Defence Force’s exhibition section where he gained experience in specifically realistic figurative sculpting and bronze casting techniques. With this new inspiration he started to produce his own series of wildlife sculptures. These were exhibited at some prestigious South African galleries, and his works are found in many local and international private collections.
His art later developed into different genres such as the social commentary in: La ragazza con la Vespa (exhibited in Florence, Italy in 2018), In Silence we Communicate, Night People and Piazza dei Carni.
In his later works the figures become more simplistic and the juxta-positioning of the figures and the relationship between them more important as in: The Kiss, Adam & Eve, The Sentinels etc. Although still figurative by nature, the storylines become multilayered and multi-dimensional.
Hermanus is in the process of emigrating to Bulgaria to further his career in Europe.
