Carol van Tonder

In 2007 I joined up with an evening art class whilst teaching grade ones by day. The evening classes enabled me to express myself in a creative way. I really enjoyed the process and at this point I decided to resign from teaching and pursue my interest in art.

In 2008 I joined an art group working under the direction of Anna-Carien Goosen who has since moved to Australia to pursue her art career. She taught me a great deal about painting realism with oils. Her enthusiasm for sketching and painting inspired me.

At this point I had a wide selection of photos of an old house falling into gentle ruin. The visible disintegration of the building and the graffiti painted on the walls provided a reference to create images on canvas.

These images encouraged me to explore the possibilities of painting in a more contemporary style. In 2010 I enrolled at the Ernst De Jong Academy of Fine Art where I studied for six years. Ernst de Jong guided me in the structural design elements of a painting. He taught me to focus on the simplistic areas of a work.

In 2018 I began classes with Johan Conradie. At this point I was still working in oil on canvas, recreating photo images. Johan introduced me to a conceptual form of art. In preparation for a new work I made a few small drawings in pen on water color paper. The small ones developed into larger intricate pieces requiring a decent amount of research into images of plant matter, underwater creatures, nanotechnology, op art, statues, gargoyles and masks, among others.

I work on watercolour paper, using black micron pens, gold, silver and white pens, watercolours, coloured inks and sometimes gold or silver leaf. Line, being one of the essential elements of art, forms the integral part of my work. It sets the rhythm and variety of my pieces, creating a visual fantasy for the viewer.
